I Slept with a Republican

The characters in Halbrook's 4th collection of short stories range from a middle-aged woman who has lost her only daughter, to an insecure Vietnam Vet to a boy who is befriended by his best friend's father (who happens to be a five foot tall tufted-eared squirrel), to a mentally unstable businessman who has plastic surgery so that he will resemble his much-admired Rottweiler ... not to mention the shocking account of a college professor who's emotions and normal sexual urges lead him into a romance with a beautiful young aerobics instructor who turns out to be a REPUBLICAN!

A recent reader, (English and Art History Professor Gay Sweeley) writes, "I read ...(the first story) Lewis and Clark... and liked it very much but Death by Walnut is the best short story I've ever read."
